In 1992, Neil Stephenson described a surrealistic three-dimensional digital space parallel to the real world in his novel Avalanche, and proposed the concepts of "Metaverse" and "Avatar", which are recognized as the official proposer of metaverse. In 2020, the COVID-19 has swept the world, the online operations in various fields have increased significantly, and there is a tendency to become the norm. The year 2021 is the first year of the Metaverse, and it is also the year of development when human beings start to migrate from the real dimension to the virtual world. From Roblox, a sandbox game platform, being the "first meta-universe stock", to Facebook officially changing its name to Meta shortly afterwards, leading to a surge in "meta-universe concept stocks", the meta-universe boom has sparked a lot of "curiosity and ambition".However, as Meta's stock price plummeted in February this year, the overzealous enthusiasm for the metaverse began to fade, and people began to wonder what the true value of the metaverse was. It was during this "sanity and exploration" phase that we at ISDS stepped in and planned ISDS-Meta, a timely move, so to speak.
Based on the opportunity of the intersection of two national strategies of integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta and rural revitalization, in order to effectively improve the level of rural design and construction, enhance people's sense of access and happiness, help the comprehensive revitalization of the countryside, the People's Government of Wujiang , Suzhou, together with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Design, jointly launched the first "Jiangcun Village China, waterfront town Habitation" Rural Design Competition in the Yangtze River Delta Ecological Green Integrated Development Demonstration Area (Wujiang).
In order to explore issues related to country revitalization and discuss on the topic of life aesthetics and innovative design, the 6th Oriental Design Forum, which was held by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the International Society for Design Science, was took place both online and offline. The life aesthetics conference panel was held in Jiangyin successfully on 18th October 2020.
In order to discuss how toinsert the Chinese culture gene into the urban and rural planning and study therelationship between regional revitalization and oriental design’s inheritanceand innovation, the 4th Oriental Design Forum was held by Shanghai JiaoTong University and the International Society for Design Science, took place inShanghai successfully on 22-24 December, 2018.
The 4th Oriental Design Forum with the theme of "Regional Revitalization and Overall Design" was solemnly held at the Academic Activity Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University from December 22nd to 24th. More than 150 representatives from universities all over the country and Germany, Japan, Korea, Britain, the United States, Hungary, Brazil, Malaysia and other countries attended the meeting.
The 3rd Oriental Design Forum and 2017 The Belt and Road and Oriental design international Conference were held in Shanghai Jiao Tong University from October 20th to 22nd. More than 130 domestic and foreign experts, scholars, well-known entrepreneurs in the field of art, design and humanism attended the forum to discuss the frontier theory and practice of art and design.
The 2nd "Oriental Design Forum" and 2016 Oriental Culture and Design Philosophy International Symposium were sponsored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, International Society for Design Science, Southeast University and Donghua University which were approved by the Ministry of Education. And international academic conference, Media and Design of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School, Southeast University Art College, Donghua University Fashion and Art College, Shanghai MFA Teaching Committee, and China Industrial Design Association, China Eastern Culture Research Association of the Ministry of Culture, China's famous city committee "China Famous City" magazine, Shanghai Art Professional Degree Graduate Education got Steering Committee's strong support.
On the afternoon of November 13, 2015, the first Oriental Design Forum hosted by Professor Li Benqian, dean of The School of Media and Design, and convened by Professor Zhou Wuzhong, dean of the Design Department, was successfully held in the new Library of Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
