The 3rd Oriental Design Forum and 2017 The Belt and Road and Oriental design international Conference were held in Shanghai Jiao Tong University from October 20th to 22nd. More than 130 domestic and foreign experts, scholars, well-known entrepreneurs in the field of art, design and humanism attended the forum to discuss the frontier theory and practice of art and design. The theory of cross culture design and integration along the route in order to accumulate the oriental design theory system resources, at the same time to promote the construction of Shanghai Oriental Design Capital and International Science Creation Center.
The Forum was approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and co-sponsored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the International Society of Design Sciences, the People's Government of Minhang district of Shanghai and Minhong Group of Shanghai Real Estate. It was sponsored by the Innovation and Design Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the International Cooperation and Exchange Office of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the International Cultural Development Center of Beijing Media Alliance. The opening ceremony was hosted by Han Ting, Vice Dean of School of Media and Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Former Vice Minister of Commerce Zhang Zhigang, Shanghai Jiao Tong University President Assistant Professor Yao Jinguang, Director of Liberal Arts Construction Department Professor Wu Jiannan, Vice General Manager of Shanghai Real Estate Minhong Group Zhang Zhixiong, Chairman of Shanghai Harbour Group Xu Shilong, Executive Chairman of China Oriental Culture Research Association Xu Yao, Executive Chairman of China Commercial Culture Research Association Fan Shiyu, Former President of International Design Science Society Professor John Shackleton, Berlin University of Art Professor Gert Groening, Pec University of Hungary Professor Istvan Kistelegdi, Fudan University Professor Meng Jian, Southeast University Professor Tao Siyan, Tongji Universiy Professor Chen Jian , East China Normal University Professor Gu Ping and Shanghai University Professor Su Jincheng were attended the meeting.
Wu Jiannan, Zhang Zhixiong, Xu Shilong and Zhou Wuzhong delivered speeches on behalf of the sponsors, enterprises and contractors respectively. Professor Wu Jiannan, on behalf of the Liberal Arts Construction Department of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, warmly welcomed the delegates and expressed his heartfelt thanks to the experts and scholars who have been concerned about Shanghai Jiao Tong University and supported the development of art and design disciplines. He also introduced the development course of the design discipline of the Jiao Tong University, the growth of the Oriental Design Forum and the development prospect of the design discipline. He hoped that representatives will actively discuss the oriental design and form excellent academic achievements, which will not only help the construction of our design discipline. It will also contribute to the inheritance and innovation of the “The Belt and Road Initiative” and Chinese traditional culture.
Mr. Zhang Zhixiong explained the advantages of Jiao Tong University's design and the significance and intention of setting up an innovation and design center in neoBay to promote innovation and entrepreneurship development in neoBay. He said that neoBay would concentrate on relying on the resources of the center to cultivate, incubate and transform upstream and downstream industries in the field of design. The operation of the center will also promote the large-scale development of the creative design industry in the neoBay and even the southern Shanghai Science and Technology Center will promote the full concentration and integration of resources within the industry to the neoBay. Mr. Xu Shilong said that he will cooperates fully with the Innovation and Design Center of Jiao Tong University in the construction of islands, and jointly develop and win-win cooperation. At the opening ceremony, Professor Zhou Wuzhong, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Forum, Director of the Design Department of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Director of the Innovation Design Center have made a speech on "Exploring Oriental Design Roads and Cultivating World-Class Disciplines".
In order to further systematically study the Belt and Road and Oriental design ideas and theoretical systems, this forum launched the “2017 Belt and Road and Oriental Design International Seminar” as one of the main academic activities of the 3rd Oriental Design Forum, focusing on “cultural channels”. This theme aims to explore how to use the theory and methods of Oriental design to promote cross-cultural exchanges between countries along the Belt and Road.
The 2nd Oriental Design Excellent Thesis Award Ceremony and the appointment ceremony of Oriental think tank experts were held at the opening ceremony. Six papers, including Dr. Chen Pu of Weimar Bauhaus University, East-West Cultural Exchange on the Silk Road, Professor Tao Siyan of Southeast University, on the Application of Folk Symbols in Oriental Design, and Xiao Bing, Associate Professor of Shanghai Jiaotong University, won the first prize; Xu Shilong, John Shackleton, Gert Groening, Istvan Kistelegdi，Mengjian, Tao Siyan, Dong Qun, Chen Jian, Gu Huizhong, Gu Ping, Su Jincheng and Zhang Tianlai were appointed as the first group of expert members of Oriental Think Tank.
The subsequent three conference reports were presided over by Professor Zhou Wuzhong, Professor Lin Xun from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Professor Chen Jian from Tongji University. Zhang Zhigang former vice-minister of the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, librarian of the Central Library of Culture and History, Professor Tao Siyan of Southeast University, Professor Meng Jian, Director of the National Cultural Innovation and Design Center of Fudan University, and other 20 famous scholars at home and abroad made brilliant speeches. Put forward a lot of brilliant innovation ideas around the Belt and Road National Initiative, Oriental design, cross-cultural communication, innovative design and other topics. After the report of the conference, Professor Zhang Liqun of Shanghai Jiao Tong University introduced the overview and latest research results of the Design Management Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and presided over the launching ceremony of the “China Innovation Design Index” of the Jiao Tong University Innovation Design Center. In the evening, international students from the countries along the Belt and Road Institute performed poetry recitation programs in Chinese, which were added luster to the simple dinner.
